On August 26, 2016 the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick has caught the attention of more than just football fans by sitting during the national anthem.  Kaepernick announced that he would be protesting during the because he’s not going to stand and salute a country that oppresses black people.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color” Kaepernick told NFL.com.

As you can imagine this got a ton of attention.

Kaepernick was certainly within his first amendment rights to do this, which gives him the freedom to protest through speech and assemble. To me, it wasn’t what he was protesting about that made me mad, but the way he protested.

By not standing, Kaepernick disrespects every man and woman who has ever fought for our freedom. Many lives have been lost to protect our freedom, and many more are risking their lives today to keep our freedoms. There are people working every single day so that we can live here and live as we please. To me, that’s what the flag represents. It represents the sacrifices that not only great men like my grandfather made, but that thousands of other patriotic Americans have made. There are people serving our country making way less money than Colin, just so that he can live here and play football for a living.I would love to see him try to take his talents to another country and still be as successful as he is in America.  I am sure that many people in our country found this act just as disrespectful as I did.

Attention seeker; that’s what Colin is. He wanted attention. Supposedly he wanted attention to raise awareness for the oppressed men, women, and children of color in this country. I don’t believe it at all, I think he wanted attention for himself. Why wasn’t he so worried about these oppressed Americans when he had a starting position.

Colin Kaepernick influenced many people in different ways. He upset me with his actions and I honestly can’t understand why someone who is so successful, or at least successful enough to be on a NFL team, would disrespect his country like this. I feel if he was really concerned about the well being of the black people in our country he would have done something earlier in his career. He could have written a speech and given it at a press conference, it would have been much more respectable.

He disrespected all of our veterans, men and women, who are currently serving. Kaepernick owes our veterans a huge apology. Others including teammate Eric Reid and many others agree with Kaepernick, in fact he influenced some other football players enough for them to sit as well. I think Colin made a mark in history, and hopefully one that won’t be repeated.
