Over the past few months there has been a lot of controversy surrounding prom dates, specifically whether there is a form designed around bringing someone of the same gender or not.  A lot of students upset when they heard about this supposed “same gender” form, along with a lot of staff were frustrated with the miscommunication of facts.  Reasonably it aroused concerns and frustration from everyone involved.  Many different stories were going around and everyone just wanted the story set straight.

When talking to students, a few claimed they had been given a form that they were required to sign if they wanted to take someone of the same gender with them to prom, suggesting that it was an actual date.

“It’s unfair that they are pointing us out and doing this to us because we want to bring someone of the same gender.  Even if they are a friend or a date, they shouldn’t be doing this,” an anonymous student told us.

After discussing the concerns of students with the school’s security officer Mr. Duryea, the record was set straight.  The form that students were required to sign was simply an out of school date form.  People assumed it was something else when Mr. Duryea asked “is this your date”.  He doesn’t care if your date is male or female, he asks that because he wants to be sure that the person they are bringing is there with them and would be with them all night.  Asking this question is a security measure after past problems that went on when friends brought friends and everything getting out of hand.

There is no form you have to sign to bring someone of the same gender. The only form Mr. Duryea has is the out of school date form that you are required to fill out if you want to bring someone from a different school, whether they are the same gender or not.
