The definition of “runner’s high” is a feeling of euphoria that is experienced by some individuals engaged in strenuous running and that is held to be associated with the release of endorphins by the brain. This is one of the main reasons senior Avery Stuever enjoys running so much.

“Runner’s high is an amazing feeling. It’s almost as if you’re gliding, not even realizing how fast you’re going ” says Stuever. This is something runners experience towards the end of a race. It’s a unique feeling only a select few know about.

But another reason these cross country runners keep at it is because of the rewards. Last year the boys varsity tied for 3rd at State. The goal this year, to win.

“Running at state when there’s like 800 people running back and forth cheering you on gives you chills. That’s when I think I feel runner’s high,” says sophomore Emmet Keller. This obviously is another great reason to participate, but is this all that these runners are doing cross country for? Who would want to spend 2 hours after school running 5-8 miles in the heat of the day just to compete? Isn’t there another reason we find the team to be so successful?

“I like hanging out with everyone, meets are fun, Wamego is a blast.” says Keller. The social aspect of being on the team gives every runner a good reason to keep pushing. This is actually the most favored part of being on the team. The team takes a trip to Wamego and even stays in a hotel together, making many memories on and off the course.

Obviously the trips are great and it’s something everyone looks forward to, but with such high hopes of having an amazing year with the goal of winning state, what have they been doing to prepare for this season?

“I ran twice a day three days a week this summer. In June I ran about 74 miles, July was 154, and so far August has been 139 miles,” says sophomore Ryan Derry. He has been putting in more work than anyone the past few months. Finishing around 4th place for Circles Varsity lineup, he has high hopes this season.

A story recently was published by Kansas Mile Split predicting the outcome for 4A state cross country. The story stated that Maize South will be moving up to 5A and will compete against other larger schools this year. This gives Circle hope this year as they are now predicted to win 4A state with the Varsity roster they have this year.

Stuever is one of the Varsity’s top runners. He is looking forward to seeing how well the team does this year because this year, he knows just how good the team really is. “Running is not my forte but I like competing and I like winning.” says Stuever currently placed as second runner on the varsity lineup.

Recognition. That’s something the Circle High Cross Country team doesn’t get enough of. From multiple state placements to grueling practices, the team gets little to no coverage. But this will change. The team is looking better than ever and now, all eyes will be watching, waiting, hoping for success.
