Say there is a basketball player who makes 10/10 free throws without even practicing. There is another player that makes 9/10 but puts in the practice time everyday. Which one do you think is the better player? Is talent more important than hard work?

Talent is defined as natural aptitude or skill. With this said, we can conclude that a player that may have talent doesn’t have to work hard. On the other hand, with a player who doesn’t have the natural skill, you’d assume they’d need more practice. The real question is, can the player without the natural ability be as good or even better than the player with the natural skills?

You may be thinking, “Obviously the best people get the best opportunities.”  But the real challenge is choosing players or students who have good character and don’t just depend on the skills they’ve had since they were crawling.

When a coach or higher person decides between players/people, they look at more than just natural ability. They consider the effort of the person as well.

I know of people last year that did not make the sports team they were hoping to. They spent all of their off-season working to be better. This year, they’ve made the team and continue to prove themselves everyday.

All we see on television is the result of both talent and hard work. We don’t see the hours of effort and commitment in the process of becoming great.

Moral of the story, to be the greatest, you have to work the hardest.

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” -Kevin Durant
